ABC Family Gets Catty

Last summer ABC Family hit a home run in the ratings with the book-turned-TV show, Pretty Little Liars. Hoping to recreate the magic this summer they enlisted the help of veteran hit maker Alloy Entertainment (Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries).

The result: a lesser-known book series, but hopefully television hit, The Nine Lives of Chloe King.  Simon Pulse published the first book in the series, "The Fallen," in May 2004 to average reviews. The television series, however is quickly finding a fan-base. With vampires and witches/sorcerers dominating the big and small screen Chloe taps into an untouched market… Cat People.

The first episode (Pilot) portrays Chloe as your average 16-year-old girl who while pretty and quirky sits on the sidelines of popularity. She comes off a bit whiny as she laments about still not experiencing her first kiss and the boredom of life. Uh oh. famous last words as her simple, average life gets turned on its head.

Chloe finds out she is a descendant of an ancient race called the Mai and is blessed (cursed) with cat like powers. To make things for complicated she is prophesied to be the savior of the Mai and humanity. As the Uniter she has nine lives, a fact she discovers when thrown off a building by an assassin.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King has the makings of an ABC Family hit. With traces of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a pinch of cheesiness, and a unique premise, I’m excited and curious to see the season unfold.
