NBC's Smash: When Broadway and TV Collide

Steven Spielberg's newest NBC pilot Smash will bring Broadway to the small screen. The hour-long show will feature a cast of characters who come together to put a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway.

Pulling from both worlds, the show will reportedly star Will & Grace's Debra Messing and Wicked's Megan Hilty. Messing will play Julia, the lyricist for the production, and Hilty will play an actress who acts out scenes from the show as they develop. The pilot will be written by Theresa Rebeck (Mauritius), and feature music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can) with Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot) directing.

The show's concept comes as no surprise as it will likely try to follow the successful coat tails of FOX's Glee. However, this is just one in a long line of Glee-like shows currently in production. It's unlikely that they'll all get picked up, but with Spielberg backing it Smash has more potential than most.
