If you saw that phrase on a billboard in Times Square what would you interpret it to mean? Thought so.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the hit CW drama is taking some slack from the media for their new promo ads that are suggestive of catching venereal disease as oppose to catching the newest episode of The Vampire Diaries. When asked to comment, The CW released this statement, "VD simply stand for 'Vampire Diaries,' and anyone who thinks otherwise should probably get themselves checked out." At any rate, the slogan produced the desired effect I'm sure the show's marketing team had hoped for - it got attention.
It seems The CW likes to push the envelope when it comes to their ad campaigns, since this isn't the first time they've ruffled some feathers. Past controversial Gossip Girl promos featured the phrase "OMFG" causing just as much stir among viewers.
