Glee's Identity Crisis

Like its socially awkward, high school misfits, Glee is struggling to find out exactly where it fits in prime-time.

Most of Season 2 has been an identity crisis, as Glee has moved away from what made its premiere season charming and addicting -- successfully finding a way to make show tunes cool, and the kids who sing them, celebrities.

Instead of utilizing its mix of pop hits, Broadway favorites and rock classics, to enhance the story, it is being blinded by celebrity guests and "theme" nights.

The premise, of course, generated significant media buzz, and induced chatter of what celebrity will next make a cameo on the hit show. But after the Britney Spears episode, it became clear that if Glee continues on this path, it will become stale. Glee has become an outlet for celebs like John Stamos and Gwyneth Paltrow to show case their musical talents.

The biggest issue with the new format is the main characters that we fell in love with in Season 1 have been replaced by one-night guests. As a result, Rachel's character hasn't evolved past a whiny diva, Quinn has returned to a faceless cheerleader and Puck can't shake his bad boy image.

The only character that we have received any real story line has been Kurt, and the homosexual story line has turned into a satire rather than an honest look at the obstacles of a gay teenager.

What about Rachel's quest to have a real relationship with her mom? How does Quinn feel post-baby? They even had a great story line just waiting to be explored with new character Sunshine (Charice Pempengco), but we haven't heard anything about her since she joined Vocal Adrenaline in the first episode.

There was plenty of story left for the writers to work with, but it feels like they have given up on Glee, which doesn't bode well for Season 3.

Next week Carol Burnett will guest star as Sue Sylvester's mother, and it looks like there will be a wedding for Finn's mom and Kurt's dad. This could be a good chance for Glee to get back to its core story line and revive its characters.

Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
