American Idol Changes More Than Judges

Just after news of format changes to FOX's So You Think You Can Dance, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe reveals some more changes coming to a different reality series. American Idol returns January 12th, and with it a new set of judges plus a few new challenges for competitors. Now not only will finalists have the nerve-racking task of performing in front of celebs like Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, but they will also be asked to make a music video, promote themselves as singers and create an awards show-style performance including a band and dancers, TVGuide.com reports.

In addition to these new twists, producers of the show have eliminated the semi-finalist Top 24 round and will cut straight to the Top 12, but whether that group of singers will be chosen by the judges or viewers has yet to be revealed. "I didn't think [the top 24] were very good; I was bored with them by the time they got there," Lythgoe told TVGuide.com.

Earlier this week it was announced that theme weeks will now focus on decades as oppose to a specific artist. Stay tuned for more Idol news!
