Glee: Love or Hate The Brit?

Oops! Did Britney Spears make a mistake letting Glee take on her pop songs?

It must have been hard for the washed-up pop diva to watch Brittany, played by Heather Morris, recreate her iconic videos “I’m A Slave For You” and “Me Against the Music.” Not only was Morris an uncanny look-a-like, but her character said it best, “When I had my teeth cleaned I had the most amazing Britney Spears fantasy. I sang and dance better than her.”

“Britney/Brittany” did just that, reveal how much Britney’s talent pales in comparison to the Glee cast, and much of the talent out there. Britney Spears, herself, made just three short cameos during the episode.

While there’s no denying any one of the Glee cast can sing better than the Brit, and a few can dance circles around her, the episode did serve to make her songs relevant again. In all fairness her songs are extremely catchy and I caught myself singing “I’m A Slave 4 U” the next day as I was running on the treadmill.

Love her or hate her Britney is pop culture, and that’s what Glee celebrates. Of course Glee subtly gets the message across that it doesn’t condone Brit’s actions. "I think we've all come to appreciate her music and celebrity so much more this week," Will Schuester said at the end of the episode. "But honestly, she's just not us."

Overall, “Britney/Brittany” was one of the weakest episodes. No doubt, it was entertaining, but it really was just a remake of Britney’s videos, which didn’t drive the storyline further or have the same quirky sentiment that we’ve come to love and expect from the series.

But next week promises to change all of that, when the guest star is, well, someone a little more spiritual...

What did you think about "Britney/Brittany?"
