Nigel Lythgoe To Return to Idol?

It looks like Nigel Lythgoe, one of the orginal American Idol producers, might be returning to the show this fall, according to the New York Times. Nigel left the show two years ago to focus on producing and judging Fox's reality dancing competition, So You Think You Can Dance.

This is yet another change that is sweeping Idol. The reality singing competition already promises to be drastically different from its nine-year run, as Simon Cowell, whose British scowl has become a staple of the show, vacates his judges chair. Rumors have swirled on potential replacements for Simon, which have included Elton John, Chris Issak and Harry Connick, Jr., as well as Justin Timberlake.

If Nigel does return, he may have a few changes of his own up his sleeve. He has been quoted on CTV News as saying American Idol that it shouldn't try to replace Simon Cowell and he is against having four judges.

"It's never been my opinion that four judges work on that program because it should be about the talent," Lythgoe told CTV News. "The team took their eye off the ball a little bit and was more worried about the judges and what was happening with them than it was regarding the talent last year. It became about Kara (DioGuardi) joining and making the fourth judge, Paula (Abdul) leaving, Ellen (Degeneres) joining and Simon leaving and much more about them and concentrating on that than on the talent that they were finding."

No word on whether or not Nigel returning to Idol would affect his job producing and judging on So You Think You Can Dance.
