SYTYCD: The Hot Tamale Train Has Left The Station

Summer TCA Tour - Day 10

Looks like the Hot Tamale Train will no longer be making stops on So You Think You Can Dance.

Ballroom choreographer Mary Murphy will be replaced by Mia Michaels as resident judge on Season 7. She join producer Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman as regulars on the show. Murphy will return as a guest judge and choreographer.

Michaels was absent from most of Season 6 due to her mother’s illness.

Murphy and her signature scream will surely be missed. She also fills the role of the sympathetic mother figure; reminiscent of a less drugged up Paula Abdul.

While Michaels is an exceptional choreographer, winning an Emmy for two pieces, including the memorable bench dance in Season 2, she is grating as a judge. Michaels flip flops from overly emotional to incredibly callous. I think this is a lose-lose for SYTYCD: losing an entertaining judge in Murphy and talented choreographer in Michaels.

SYTYCD is seriously shaking up the show after last fall’s disappointing run. Changes include a top 10 rather than a top 24, and contestants will dance with SYTYCD alums instead of each other.
